Last weekend my boyfriend Danny and I adopted a cat! We’d been talking about getting a cat for a long time, but never really got around to doing it. The timing finally seemed right so we started looking. While I paid for a bunch of the cat stuff, Danny technically paid for the cat as a 25th birthday present to me. We’ve had him for a week now, and things have been going so great! I love my little tubby already. Everyone, meet Shishito!
1. Green Street Rescue
There are a bunch of cat adoption places around Philly, but we picked Green Street Rescue because they were based near our neighborhood and opening a cat cafe down the street from us soon! The website has a bunch of cute adoptable cats to look at. We went to two foster homes, and that’s when we fell in love with Shishito. He was cute, orange, sweet and well, adorbs.
2. I sort of have no idea what I’m doing.
The day we brought him home was the start of Winter Storm Jonas that greeted us last weekend. It started to snow just as we were entering our neighborhood. Shishito then proceeded to hide under the couch for awhile. I wasn’t really sure what we were supposed to do that first day. Did he know where his litter box was? What about water? What if he doesn’t eat? I’m still a little unsure on how a few things should go, but after a few hours he used the litter box, so that was a good sign.
3. Cats can pretty much take care of themselves.
It turns out, cats aren’t idiots. They know to drink because they are thirsty, they know to use the litter box because that’s what they do. He hasn’t really done anything wrong at all in the week we’ve had him. I was worried about leaving him alone all day while at work, but when I came home he just seemed to want food, then fell back asleep. It’s much more low maintenance than I expected.
4. He’s a bit tubby.
You might be able to tell in some of the pictures, Shishito here is about 5 pounds overweight. For a cat, that’s a ton. In his foster home, there was food out almost all of the time. When you’re taking care of 15 cats, you kind of need to do that. So, Shishito took full advantage! Now that he’s in our home, it’s diet time! I’m trying to get him playing to help lose weight. Hopefully by the spring he’ll be a healthy weight.
5. I’m in love.
I have very quickly fallen completely in love with this creature. I just want to get home to his little face and kiss him. He’s been the perfect cat so far except for getting litter everywhere. He doesn’t jump on things, he isn’t a picky eater, he sleeps a ton. And is just so adorable.
