Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay

Today, I’ve got one of my newest beauty obsessions for you. It’s a clay mask, but not just any clay mask. It’s 1 pound of Natural Calcium Bentonite Clay, AKA Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay. I’d seen this mentioned a few times on blogs, and kept reading rave reviews on Vitacost.com, but it took me awhile to take the plunge. A pound of clay? It’s a little scary. But use it a few times, and you’ll see why it’s the “World’s most powerful facial”.

So this giant jar it literally one pound of dry clay. Mix equal parts clay and water or Apple Cider Vinegar. I have been using the lid of the jar to mix the product together, since I don’t really have anything else. I think a small plastic bowl would be good, but I don’t use anything like that. I just rinse out the cap afterword and dry it off.

I have been using the Real Techniques Foundation Brush to apply the product since it is a bit messy. A larger foundation brush would work a little better, but this has been fine.

As you can see, it’s a very fine powder. You only really need a teaspoon or two to cover the whole face, so I’m going to have this jar around for quite sometime. I usually mix the product with the brush, but honestly that doesn’t work very well. It gets clumpy. A spoon works a little better.

You can use water or apple cider vinegar, both work fine. I suggest water at first. Then maybe a mix of the two, then just ACV if you like it.

The product is actually quite intense, which is why I suggest just water at first. After painting my face with the product, it starts to dry and then…pulsate. I swear. The face starts to feel warm, and you can feel the blood rushing to your face! It’s so so so weird, but I’m starting to get used to it. It really feels like it’s working at getting those toxins out of the body!

With such a fine powder, and having to mix it yourself, things can get messy. Just taking the top off I get powder everywhere. I have a small bathroom too so it’s hard to find a place to mix it.

After washing the mask off, my face is a bit red, and definitely feels like I just got a facial! I like to follow up with the Origins Drink Up Mask. The clay can be a bit drying, so I want to make sure my skin is still getting moisture. My skin feels so soft and clean.

I like to use this once a week or so, usually a Sunday, to prep my skin for the week ahead and rid it of last weeks gunk and grime. It’s the best deep clean I can get easily. With weekly use my skin has been clear, but I’m still having some issues with blackheads on my nose and chin. I’m hoping with continued use this problem will get cleared up.

As the mask dries, you will start to look like a lizard, but that’s okay. It gets very tight and firm, but actually washes off quite easily with lukewarm water. It also washes out of the brush I use very easily.

Overall, if you’re a skincare junky, you must try this. Plus, it’s only $5 from Vitacost.com. I’ve heard people say it’s better than the GlamGlow masks, but I haven’t used those so I can’t compare. It’s a fun product to use, and it actually does wonders for the skin. I’m thinking this would be a great activity for a girls night!

  1. My pore-riddled, acne-prone skin needs a deep cleansing mask like this one. I love GlamGlow but it is too spendy to keep up. Thanks for pointing this out!

  2. I have oily skin and have been using this product, alone, as my skin mask for over 3 years now. I love it!!! I’ve never tried using it with ACV, but for me I don’t think I need the extra umph to this mask. 🙂 Great review, girl!!!

  3. I actually have a big jar of dried clay hanging around and I have been figuring out what to use it for besides detox baths (which are great BTW and your whole body sweats lol) but now I want to try this with it! 🙂

  4. It sounds like a fun science experiment, mixing your own mask. I like clay masks. I appreciate your great review. I think my daughter would like this too. I might need to get a pound!

  5. I tried a similar Bentonite Clay by another brand, and the difference in my acne prone skin was noticeable almost immediately. Great share, I really like the photos of your post, and the idea of using a brush, I used my hands and I think I ended up with too much of the clay on my face, next time I’ll follow your suggestion and use a brush.
