I love this time of the mont..two little pink packages of joy show up in my mail box. Despite my love for both Ipsy and Birchbox, I’m thinking about canceling my subscriptions. I find I usually don’t like one or two of the items in my box, which feels like a waste of money. I also have started to accumulate a large amount of items I haven’t had a chance to use yet. Also, I have been trying to use more natural products, and Ipsy and Birchbox offer very few of those.
Ipsy Classic Beauty
Starlooks Eyeliner in Obsidian: I’ve received a lip liner from Starlooks in the past, and found it to be a bit dry, and I feel the same about this eyeliner. It’s not very smooth, which makes applying on the eye difficult. It’s not the worst, but there are definitely better. Color wise, it is pretty black, so that’s a plus.
NYX Eyeshadow in Velvet Suede: I’m a fan of NYX shadows because I think they are pretty good for the very cheap price. I am sad to have received a color I will rarely wear. Velvet Suede is a bluey grey, with a bit of shimmer. It isn’t super pigmented which is a plus in this case. With a very light hand, the color comes across more silver, but I’d prefer if it had been a matte neutral!
Elizabeth Mott It’s So Big Mascara: Yet another mascara sample. I love these because they always last so long…BUT I’ve currently got two full sized mascaras open that I’m loving. By looking at the wand, I don’t think I’ll be a fan of this, but it probably won’t be horrible either. I noticed it has a strong latex-y smell, which hopefully won’t irritate my eyes.
John Frieda Full Repair Shampoo and Conditioner: Props to Ipsy for these decently sized samples, rather than foil packets. Not props to Ipsy for samples of shampoo and conditioner I don’t need! These are for “overworked hair” and are supposed to restore volume. I don’t have overworked hair, and my hair is voluminous on its own.
Em Cosmetics The Life Palette Sample: This is sort of a bonus item, but I included it anyway. Em Cosmetics is the make up line by Michelle Phan. She’s a big Ipsy supporter, so this is just a shameless plug. First of all, the picture of the palette looks really difficult to understand and just big in general. The little sample part is a cool idea to get to see what the make up is like. These eyeshadow colors aren’t really my style though.
Borracha Pearly Wipes: Is this packaging amazing or what? These are wipes that whiten teeth and freshen breath with peppermint and hydrogen peroxide. I think these are a great idea, especially for people who like to go out after work, or like garlic. The full size comes in a cute little travel compact too.
Paula’s Choice RESIST BHA 9: I have been interested in the Paula’s Choice company because I hear their products have some better ingredients. This is a serum with salicylic acid that is supposed to spot correct, get rid of wrinkles, all that magic. I wish the sample was a bit bigger though, I doubt I’ll see a difference with just this little vile.
Elizabeth Arden Lip Gloss in Precious Petal: This is a perfect size, and an amazing color. Light pink with a tinge of shimmer, it is a perfect everyday color. Very happy with this. It is smooth, and not too sticky. Oh, and it taste like the most amazing cupcake you’ve ever eaten.
Ruffian Nail Lacquer in Fox Hunt: Not a color I would have picked myself, but definitely a nice bright option for fall. This is a new company, so I’m excited to try it and see how it is. Interesting packaging too. It will be easy to spot in my draw of bottles.
Davines This Is a Sea Salt Spray: So Davines is a company that makes a lot of interesting products. I recently heard about them and found out they had the “best shampoo for curly hair” so I’ve been testing it out. Now, I’m sure this sea salt spray is loved by many, and it does have a nice smell and feel in the hair….BUT, it is SEPTEMBER. Who want salty beach hair in September? This would have been amazing a few months ago. Amazing size though, it is huge!
So after writing this, I actually canceled my Ipsy subscription. I was looking at the bag again and realized I’m never going to love any of the things in the box. Also, I’m so tired of getting these cheap tiny make up bags I can barley fit anything in. I’m going to give Birchbox one more month to win me over, then I’m moving on.
