Over Spring Break I took a few days at my parent’s house to relax, eat, and drink. My mom and I have always loved making up new concoctions for drinks, but sometimes it can be hard to find ones that aren’t overly complicated. This Spiced Blood Orange cocktail was simple, and tastes like a lot more work went into it!
In a bowl or measuring cup, combine 4 ounces of rum (tequila would also work well here), 1 cinnamon stick, a nub of nutmeg, 1 teaspoon of dried cloves, and a quarter of a habanero pepper. Let this sit for 30 mins to a few hours, depending on how much time you have. Depending on the potency of your spices/pepper, the rum will infuse quicker.
Juice 1 lime, 1 blood orange, and 1 orange. Blood oranges are a lot sweeter than regular oranges, so I mixed the two, and added the lime for a more sour flavor. Remember to strain the juice to get any pulp out.
If you’re lucky, your trusty man in your life will help you juice because it hurts your wrists to do so.
Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with loads of ice and shake shake shake. The blood orange makes this drink a crazy pretty pink color.
Pour into whatever glass you choose, and drink up!
Spiced Blood Orange Cocktail (Makes 2)
1 blood orange
4 ounces white rum
1/4 habanero pepper
1 teaspoon dried cloves
1 cinnamon stick
Nub of nutmeg
1. Combine pepper and spices in a measuring cup with rum and let sit 1/2-2 hours, strain.
2. Juice all fruit, strain to remove pulp.
3. Combine rum and juice in cocktail shaker. Shake and serve.
